Cape Town is not just all about wines, Simonsberg just outside of Stellenbosch is a paradise for cheese lovers.
We tried the blue cheese, brie en cottage cheeses, all excellent quality! They produce the best cheeses with the best available milk: Jersey milk!
The Jersey breed originates from the Channel Islands, with ancestors thought to stretch back to Normandy and Brittany. The first Jersey herd reached South African shores in 1881. Simonsberg can trace its Jersey heritage back to the famed Jersey herd established on Schoongesicht farm in 1892. In the 1960s the acclaimed Jersey farmer Douglas Houston made a legendary contribution to Simonsberg by building a world class Jersey herd, setting new standards in the industry.

Rich in colour and flavour, Jersey milk is special in many ways: It contains 18% more protein, 20% more calcium and 25% more butterfat than milk from other breeds. With the highest protein content of all the dairy breeds and excellent milk-fat content, Jersey milk is prized for softer cheeses, such as camembert, brie, blue cheese, cream cheese, feta and mozzarella.
